Dolores sat by the window, staring at the steep steps leading to the front yard. They had once been just another part of her home—a home she had loved for decades. But now, they were an insurmountable obstacle. Each climb felt like a mountain, each descent a risk.
I can’t even begin to explain how much of a blessing this has been. For the longest time, I kept telling my husband, Ron, “I can’t stay here.” The stairs were too much—I could barely get up and down them without pain. I felt trapped in my own home. Every time I tried to move around, it was a struggle. I would hold onto the railing, sometimes even get stuck, and end up in tears. I knew something had to change, but I didn’t know where to turn.
Then, I reached out to the Area Agency on Aging, and they told me about Servants. When the team arrived, I didn’t know what to expect, but from the moment I met them, I knew they were different. They weren’t just workers—they were kind, compassionate, and truly cared about me and my home.
The first thing they did was fix the front steps. Before, I couldn’t even make it to the porch without struggling. They built a new step that was even with the door, making it possible for me to walk outside safely. Then, they installed a lift, which was another blessing. Suddenly, I didn’t feel so trapped anymore.
But the most life-changing thing they did was fix my bathroom. This house is old—it was built in 1933—and my shower was just too high for me to step in and out of safely. Servants lowered the step, making it possible for me to bathe without fear of falling.
And the best part? At the end of all their work, they prayed with me. That meant the world to me. Other people might do a good job, but nobody does it like Servants.
Now, when I walk through my home, I don’t feel stuck anymore. I feel safe, free, and deeply grateful for the incredible kindness they showed me. I tell everyone about them because they didn’t just fix my house—they gave me my life back.
