A Safer Way Home for Gladys

At 84, Gladys has already endured more than most. While recovering from her first hip replacement, she suffered a fall that resulted in breaking her other hip—turning an already difficult season into an overwhelming one. Using a walker made navigating stairs nearly impossible, yet she had no other choice. Each time she tried to leave or enter her home, she risked another fall, and unfortunately, that fear became reality more than once. The steps weren’t just inconvenient—they were dangerous.
Still, Gladys carried on with quiet strength. Not long before all of this, she had also lost her husband, a proud Vietnam veteran she still speaks of with deep love. Her home held memories of a life built together, and despite everything she was facing, she wanted to remain there. But when a contractor told her the cost of a ramp, it quickly became clear that staying safely in her home might not be possible.
That’s when everything changed. A team of volunteers stepped in and built a strong, beautiful ramp—giving Gladys a safe and reliable way to enter and exit her home. What had once been a daily risk is now a place of stability and confidence. For Gladys, this wasn’t just about accessibility—it was about restoring her independence and allowing her to remain in the place she loves.
“I am so thankful that I can get out now,” she shared. “The steps were so unsafe, and I was falling a lot. I feel so much safer now.” Those words say everything. Safety brings peace. Stability brings dignity. And for Gladys, it means she can move forward with confidence—held up not just by a ramp, but by a community that showed up when she needed it most.
