Summer Is Better When You Serve Together

Summer has a way of bringing people together.

Longer days. Cookouts. Open windows. Time with family. Vacation plans. The sound of cicadas and lawn mowers in the background. And across York, Lancaster, and Adams Counties, summer also becomes one of the busiest and most meaningful seasons of volunteering at Servants.

Every summer, volunteers show up to build ramps, repair dangerous stairs, install grab bars, replace unsafe flooring, and help neighbors remain safe and independent in the homes they love.

And some of the best memories are made while serving side by side.

A teenager learning how to use a drill for the first time.

A retired contractor teaching a new volunteer how to build a handrail.

Church groups laughing over pizza after a long day in the heat.

Neighbors sitting on their porch again because they finally have a safe way in and out of their home.

These moments matter.

Summer volunteering is not just about projects getting completed. It is about relationships being built.

For many of the neighbors we serve, isolation becomes part of everyday life. Mobility challenges, health concerns, and financial hardship can make even simple home repairs feel impossible. A broken step, unsafe bathroom, or unstable railing can slowly steal independence and peace of mind.

But when volunteers arrive, something changes.

Hope walks up the driveway.

One of the beautiful things about volunteering with Servants is that you do not need to be an expert contractor to make a difference.

Some volunteers swing hammers.

Others paint, clean up debris, organize supplies, serve meals, pray with neighbors, or simply encourage someone who feels forgotten.

Everyone has something to give.

Summer also gives families, students, churches, businesses, and community groups a unique opportunity to serve together. Whether it is a single day project, a Work Camp, or a Love Your Neighbor Day, volunteers often leave realizing they received just as much as they gave.

Because service changes people.

It reminds us that small acts of kindness still matter.

It reconnects us to our communities.

It helps us slow down enough to notice the needs around us.

And sometimes, it starts with something as simple as building a ramp.

As summer continues, we invite you to consider joining us.

Bring your church group.

Bring your coworkers.

Bring your kids or grandkids.

Or simply come serve for a day and see what happens.

You may help repair a home.

But you will also help restore dignity, independence, and hope.

And chances are, you will leave encouraged too.

Learn more about upcoming volunteer opportunities with Servants and discover how you can help preserve homes and provide hope this summer.
